COURSE DESCRIPTIONS and OBJECTIVES
In each of the assigned courses students will learn to look and talk about art, increase in his/her use and understanding of art vocabulary, and produce original personal works of art. All courses will build and teach around the elements of art and principles of design. Students will learn to self-assess his/her artwork, make needed adjustments, and critique other student work. Students will experience a broad range of art forms by using a variety of media and materials. Safe and responsible use will be strongly emphasized. At the end of each course students will have a portfolio containing multiple works of art displaying evidence of student learning.
Painting and Drawing: This course will be an introduction to drawing and painting techniques. Students will be asked to look at objects and draw from seeing and observation.
Visual Arts: Artwork created in this course will focus on 2D and 3D design, experimenting with collage and sculptural processes as well as drawing and painting.
Printmaking: Printmaking is a type art that allows the artist to create multiple images of work by hand. In this course students will create prints with a tight focus on line and pattern. Students will learn the basics of printmaking and the processes involved in generating, choosing, and refining ideas to produce meaningful works of art.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
MATERIALS
Materials will be provided for all art classes. Students who misuse classroom materials will be expected to replace damaged/stolen materials. A fee may be assigned to student if replacement is not an option.
GRADING
Each assignment/project is worth a determined amount of points, which depends on the difficulty and length of the assignment/project.
Some assignments are purely based on participation. Other assignments and projects will be graded on a specific rubric for that particular assignment.
Late work: Late work can be turned in up to two weeks after the due date with no penalty. After two weeks, work will not be accepted.
Redo: If a student does poorly on an assignment, the student may redo the assignment within one week after it is graded. Students should clearly mark on the back, Redo, before turning in the assignment.
Extra Credit: Opportunities for extra credit will be offered from time to time. Extra credit is extra work above and beyond the usual homework, not work used to cover up missing work.
Absences: If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get all late work from the teacher and return it in a timely manner.
CLASSROOM POLICIES
Cell Phone: Students will follow the district policy on cell phone use unless otherwise directed by the instructor.
Music: Music will be allowed in class on personal devices only during non-lecture/instructional teaching time. If listening to music during approved times, ear buds/earphones must be connected with a volume level that still allows the student to hear the instructor. If music or the device becomes a distraction or the policies are not met, it may result in the device being confiscated, returned to the student by an administrator, and music privileges lost.
On occasion the instructor may play music for the students if they are working quietly and on task. However, the instructor is not a DJ and will not take music requests.
Backpacks: Backpacks are not allowed in Ms. Shupe’s class. It is the students’ responsibility to put his or her backpack away before class. Binders will be allowed if stowed under the table or out of the way. The hallway is not your locker and is not a place for stowing backpacks. Please plan accordingly, students are still expected be on time and prepared for class.
Food, Drink, Gum: Water is the only beverage allowed in Ms. Shupe’s class. Students are allowed to bring personal snacks so long as the classroom stays clean and garbage is thrown away. Gum is allowed as long as it remains in students’ mouths. Garbage receptacles are located throughout the classroom. Desks, chairs and floors are not appropriate places to store/dispose of gum.
Hall pass: Students will be allowed 5 hall pass uses for the trimester. These need to be checked off and dated by the instructor. Students should use hall passes during appropriate class times. Just because the student has available hall passes, does not mean the student will be allowed to use them whenever. Once all 5 hall passes are used up, the student will not be allowed to use a hall pass. Use wisely! Any students with remaining hall passes will be entered into a drawing at the end of the trimester.
Seating Chart: The instructor will assign each student to a seat. Students will be expected to sit in his or her assigned seat at all times unless instructed otherwise. Failure to do so may result in student being marked tardy and in some cases absent for that class period.
